Ebook design shines light on cosmology

Cosmology
This eBook for the Royal Astronomical Society is a basic introduction to the history of the universe from the Big Bang around 13.7 billion years ago, to the present day – and beyond. In easy-to-read chunks illustrated with photographs and diagrams, you can find out how we know the universe is expanding, how planets are built, why the sky is dark at night, and more.

Website for journalist makes its mark

MarkRowe
I have designed (and also host) a new website for freelance journalist Mark Rowe to show off his work. Even though he can write about complex technical subjects such as nanotechnology in paint, he admits to being a technophobe – so the solution had to be as simple as possible. I built the site using WordPress and after a little training he can now easily update it himself.

New website is as easy as ABC

abc
I’ve just finished refreshing the website for high-tech PR company Avon Business Communications. They wanted a simple, clear site that they can easily update themselves. Have a look at it here: abccoms.com.

RAS website

I have redesigned the website for the Royal Astronomical Society, which went live today.
The brief: The RAS wanted their old site switched from Mambo to Joomla! as the underlying CMS. In tandem with this switch they wanted to improve navigation and ‘findability’ of information, as well as to improve the site’s appearance. The website is updated by staff and volunteers with no design experience, so it needs a robust structure requiring no additional support.
The result: I provided a compact home page, which is viewable even on relatively small screens. Much time was spent reorganising the existing 1500+ pages to reduce the number of menu items and to group pages more logically, as well as to give each page a more consistent appearance. Instead of just showing ‘news’ items, the home page now also contains additional navigation tools (‘quick links’), and lists the next two scientific meetings. And there are two panels which change randomly on each visit: a ‘Did you know?’ item to highlight aspects of the Society’s work, and a colourful image linked to a recent news item. As a result, the home page is more compact than before, but is more attractive, works harder to aid the visitor in finding what they want, and better reflects the variety of the Society’s functions. I also wrote a users’ guide and delivered training to staff on how to write, style and add pages to the new site.
On the project I acted as the designer, but worked closely with a Joomla! expert who handled the technical side.

Prof professes thanks

Just received a nice email from a man I've never met, Prof. Tom Hartquist, Head of Astrophysics Group at the University of Leeds. He has just seen a PDF proof of an article he wrote for the February 2009 issue of Astronomy & Geophysics, and was impressed:
"Dear Paul,
I just wanted to let you know how grateful Ove, Meseret, and I are to you for the beautiful layout you have done for our polar mesosphere article. It is extremely striking and makes a wonderful impression. I intend to display the article in my office once it has come out.
A&G looks like a really high class publication. You do a great job, and I know that Sue [Bowler, editor] enjoys working with you."

Christmas comes early – again!

For the last few years I've had a regular summer job – working on the Waterstone's Christmas Gift Guide. This involves basic subbing of a few hundred short book reviews, plus checking details such as title, author and even ISBN number. This is an apt focus for my pedantic attention to detail. Unfortunately, thanks to our poor summer, this job hasn't felt so unseasonal this year.
